Started out late and took the RER C to the Eiffel Tower - arrived underneath it just as the police in riot squad gear arrived and surrounded a group of protesters ( something to do with Pakistan, but we're not sure exactly what). Interesting to watch, as the police just separated them from the rest of the people and let them yell, wave banners, make their statements, sing, etc. After 30-45 minutes the police formed 2 lines and walked the protesters peacefully to large paddy wagons and, off they went. Now I know one thing the police do, and they did it quite well! We walked down the side of the Champ de Mars as the center is all fenced off with a huge stage and lots of tents and lots of workmen preparing for Thursdays festivities. Found a Brasserie and stopped for a drink. Haven't really spent a lot of time in the 7th arrondisement, except to see the touristy spots so it was fun to see the area. Along Avenue de la Motte Picquet there was a huge flea market, so we strolled along it and looked at the variety of items for sale in the stalls - furniture (antique & new), linens, jewelry, china, books and almost anything else you might imagine. Went into Lenotre, a great Patisserie and gourmet food shop and bought some tapenade, baguette, cheese & macarons. Then ran into Rick Steves at the corner Bistro shooting a segment of one of his upcoming shows. It is so true when they say you never know what you'll find around the next corner. Got on the Metro there and continued home. Went to dinner on Ile St Louis at Brasserie de I'lle St
Louis, but Peter stayed back to rest (He'd had a jambon sandwich earlier). Anthony just had a beer and then left to go over to the bar they found the night before as he wanted to be there when the musicans started at 10. Greer & I shared escargot and then I had the duck confit (perfectly done) but with boring roasted potatoes instead of fries, the way it's served in the Dordogne. Greer had the sea bass with a vegetable melange & both were delicious. We shared a pichet of vin rouge. We went back & picked up Peter and walked over to Le Caveau des Oubliettes in the Latin Quarter. The down stairs cave was packed shoulder to shoulder so we sat upstairs where there was a little air and a big TV screen so you could see & hear the musicians. After they finished their set and break, they started the jam session and Anthony was the first one who got to sit in and play. He was, of course, the best musician of the night!!! We ended up closing the place at 2 am, walked back to the apt and talked until 4.
OMG, who do we think we are??
You need to be careful when "picket" up Peter, or you might end up in the paddy wagon.
